Did You Know That Not All Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

A lot of people have the idea that once a wisdom tooth comes in, it needs to come out. This is not the case. Some wisdom teeth need to be extracted for the safety and health of their mouth, while others are perfectly fine staying in place.

It takes looking at the teeth themselves, plus a full set of x-rays to know if the teeth are going to be able to remain in place or not. That is reason we suggest you call us as soon as they begin to erupt.

When Wisdom Teeth Can Remain in Place

If you come in and see us regularly, we can keep a close eye on your wisdom teeth during the eruption phase. We will look at the teeth and make sure there is enough room to keep them healthy. You will need to be able to get around the tooth when brushing and flossing to make sure that part of the tooth isn't covered, as that will cause it to decay.

The moment we see anything wrong with your wisdom tooth, such as a spot of decay, we will talk to you about extracting the tooth. Until we actually see something wrong with the tooth, as long as there is room to keep it clean and healthy, there is no reason to do so.

By talking with an oral surgeon, you get the advice of someone that knows what goes into taking out your wisdom tooth. We want to see your mouth remain as healthy as possible, and that is our only goal. Don't be afraid to come in and ask our opinions about what to do when it comes to keeping your wisdom teeth healthy. Call us today, and schedule an appointment right away!
