Having TMJ can come seemingly out of the blue. It can leave you feeling as though you don't know what to expect. If you even suspect that you could struggle with TMJ, it is important that you seek out advice from your oral surgeon or your dentist.

They are going to be the ones who can give you the most information on what to expect, and what to do about it when symptoms flare up.

TMJ Symptoms That May Happen to You

One of the most common symptoms of TMJ also happens to be the least helpful when it comes to diagnosis. This symptom is an increase in headaches. This symptom is incredibly vague, which makes it hard to pinpoint to a problem with your jaw joint. The most important thing to remember with this symptom is that it can help with diagnosis when accompanying other symptoms.

Pain in the jaw joint itself, the ear, radiating into the teeth, up through the cheekbones, or the temples can all signal problems with your TMJ. When you have headaches plus pain in a couple of these places, it can definitely point to an issue that should be checked out by your oral surgeon.

Ringing in the ears can come as a result of TMJ, as can pain that radiates down your neck and into your shoulders and upper back. Noise when opening the jaw joint, such as a clicking or popping, or even stiffness and freezing of the jaw joint, both point to TMJ issues as well.

If you struggle to function properly due to discomfort in any of these areas, it is important that you get it checked out. The sooner you get it treated, the less discomfort you will be in both now, and in the future.
