How Oral Surgeons Remove Impacted Teeth

Wisdom teeth and impacted teeth removal at OMA Midwest City.
Have you recently been told that you have an impacted tooth that will require extraction? If so, you may be trying to figure out exactly what that means. Impacted basically translates to stuck. It means that your tooth is stuck where it is and it is not going to come out properly on its own. This means your oral surgeon is going to have to go in and remove that tooth. It is common with wisdom teeth. Your oral surgeon has special techniques they can use to remove an impacted tooth.

Extracting an Impacted Tooth

When you have a tooth that gets stuck, it needs to be removed differently than by being pulled straight out. If you pull it straight, it could harm a nearby tooth. Most oral surgeons will cut up through some of the gum tissue to access the tooth. They will then determine if the tooth can come out in one piece, or if it needs to be broken up into smaller pieces. Sometimes smaller pieces are easier to pull out without damaging nearby teeth than one large piece. If this is the case, the oral surgeon will cut or break the tooth into smaller pieces, then remove them one at a time. Once the tooth is fully removed, they will stitch up any cut they made, and you will be good to go.

Extracting a tooth is a very individual process. No two teeth will be removed in exactly the same manner. Your oral surgeon will be able to discuss with you what sedation or numbing options you have for the procedure, and they can explain what they believe the process will be like, if you want to know. Ask all of your questions ahead of time, and try to prepare for your recovery before you go in. That way, once you are done, you can go home and just relax.
